CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Raegan

I trembled with nerves as I sat between Ash and Tarin in the back of the SUV.

I’d rested my head on Ash’s shoulder, hoping to make the guys think I relaxed on the trip. The hands I clasped tightly between my knees told a different story. I still struggled with moving in with the guys, and now, I was going to meet their families.

Ash’s hand reached around and began gently stroking my hair. It should have been awkward considering he’d used the arm I wasn’t leaning on, so it stretched in front of my face. The soft strokes were calming though, and I let myself be lulled into a worry-free stupor.

It didn’t take long before we’d pulled in front of a rather lovely, gray, two-story home. Several cars were parked in front, including a truck that matched Tarin’s.

I swallowed hard as I climbed out of the Bronco behind Ash. Part of me wanted to grab onto a hand for reassurance, but I didn’t know whose hand I wanted most.

While the house was lovely, the landscaping took my breath away. Large flower beds, with stone decorations of animals, surrounded a small pond with a fountain in the center. Ripples broke the surface. Were there fish in it? The flowers appeared to make a pattern of sorts, but I couldn’t figure out the design. As we walked up to the porch, I glimpsed a vegetable garden on the side of the house.

When Tarin opened the door and walked in without knocking, I had to hold in my surprise, until I remembered it was his parents’ house.

I froze just inside the foyer, unsure of what to do.

“Riva!” A tiny bundle of energy with light brown hair and a button nose launched herself at River.

My eyes widened as he reached down and scooped up the little girl, who looked so much like him. Was this the little sister he’d mentioned?

“Bethany Marie! Let your brother get in the door!”

At the shout, my head swiveled around, probably looking like something from the exorcist.

A woman walked toward us, having come from one of the side rooms. She was short, with the same light brown hair as the little girl and River, kind eyes, and wearing scrubs with dancing cupcakes.

The little girl, Bethany, leaned back until she was nearly upside down, still clutching tightly to River. “Lookie, Momma! Riva!”

“Yes, honey, I see that,” she said patiently. “Now, please straighten up before you fall and break open your head.”

Bethany straightened with a pout as the woman reached River and pried her daughter off him before kissing his cheek.

“Hello, honey,” she said, placing Bethany on her feet.

The little cherub looked around, noticed me, and tilted her head to the side. “Who are you?”

I drew in a breath and squatted so I was on her level. “My name is Rae.” I held out a hand to Bethany. “I’m a friend of your brother’s.”

Bethany studied me intently for a moment, then took my outstretched hand. “You’re very pretty. Do you love Riva? Riva loves me, and Riva loves mommy.
